The Guzzardi factor: Could a conservative challenger make Tom Corbett a one-term Pa. governor?

Veteran political observer Brad Bumsted takes a look at a long-shot primary challenge to Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett by conservative activist Bob Guzzardi.

Will the challenge further weaken Corbett and open the way for a Democratic governor from the current crop of tax-and-spend liberals seeking their party nod?

From Busted's latest column:
If Guzzardi draws a heavy anti-Corbett vote in a primary, he can significantly damage Corbett's re-election prospects. Surely Guzzardi, a very bright guy, knows he would be indirectly helping a Democrat win.

Guzzardi likely doesn't care. He is committed to long-term reform of the Republican Party and he believes a Democrat will win anyway.

Robertson Family Stands Behind Phil Robertson; Threatens to End 'Duck Dynasty' on A&E

The Robertson Family is standing behind patriarch Phil Robertson in his dispute with A&E network over comments Robertson made about his faith to a magazine. The family has put A&E on notice that it will not continue the show without Phil Robertson. The network stands to lose millions if the family pulls out of the show.

Here's the statement issued by the Robertson Family at its Duck Commander website:
We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E's decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart" and "Love your neighbor as yourself." Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family."

Sen. Toomey endorses re-election of Gov. Tom Corbett

In the first major Republican endorsement for the 2014 race for Pennsylvania governor, U.S. Senator Pat Toomey on Friday threw his support behind the incumbent GOP ticket for Pennsylvania governor and lt. governor, citing Gov. Tom Corbett's fiscal leadership over the past three years:
“I am proud to endorse Tom Corbett and Jim Cawley for another term as Governor and Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, because they recognize the importance of preserving the fiscal health of our Commonwealth for future generations,” Toomey said in a press release.

“Under the leadership of the Corbett-Cawley team, fiscal discipline has returned to Harrisburg.  Whether it was eliminating a $4.2 billion deficit without raising taxes, or enabling the private sector to create 141,000 jobs, Governor Corbett has consistently championed policies to protect the tax dollars of hard-working Pennsylvanians.  That is an impressive achievement few governors can claim.”

Upon receiving the endorsement of Senator Toomey, Gov. Corbett issued the following statement:
"I am honored to receive the endorsement of Pat Toomey, a leading advocate of smaller government and fiscal responsibility. The relationship Senator Toomey and I have developed has been critical in preventing the one-size-fits-all mandates of Washington, D.C., from threatening Pennsylvania’s economic recovery,” Corbett added.  “I look forward to a continued partnership with Senator Toomey as we strive to bring more jobs and less taxes to Pennsylvania.”

Obama Takes His Place In History

Real U.S. Unemployment Rate Is 11.8%

Investor's Business Daily has calculated the real unemployment rate in this country and it's a lot higher than the numbers released by the Obama administration. One of the Labor Department's "dirty little secrets" is that the monthly jobless rate does not count people who have given up looking for work. When you factor in those folks, the real unemployment is in double-digits: 11.8 percent to be exact.

From Investor's Business Daily:
Census employees "faked" employment survey data, possibly accounting for an unemployment drop just before the 2012 election, claims the New York Post.

But even taking the government figures at face value, the jobless rate is radically distorted — and by far more than a short-term drop of a few tenths of a percentage point.

The unemployment rate was 7.3% as of October, still high but essentially at the lowest level since the end of 2008. However, almost all of the apparent improvement has come from a historic exodus from the labor force.

Excluding this dramatic shift, the jobless rate would be 11.8%, 4.5 percentage points above the official figure and virtually unchanged from peak levels.

Sen. Pat Toomey: All of Obamacare 'is unworkable'

Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey issued a blistering press release today following the release of dismal Obamacare enrollment numbers:
"Today’s enrollment numbers are further evidence that the President's health care law is a train wreck in the making.  Even more troubling are the millions who are losing health coverage they like because the President deemed those plans inadequate and failed to make good on his promise that 'if you like your plan, you can keep it.' To make matters worse, these newly uninsured – including many Pennsylvanians – are not able to obtain new coverage online because the Obamacare website is not functioning adequately.

"The faulty website is only the tip of the iceberg. It's not technical glitches that will doom this system, it is the fact that the President’s health care law forces people to buy overpriced health plans they don't want, hikes taxes, and puts important, personal health care decisions in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats instead of patients and their doctors. The whole law is unworkable."
